St. Thomas Aquinas is known as the Angelic Doctor, not only on account of the heights of his mystical life, his singular genius, but also for his clear and systematic teaching on angels. Of all the sources he uses, he is most indebted to a mysterious 5th or 6th-century writer who put the name Dionysius the Areopagite to a treatise entitled “The Celestial Hierarchy.”
In Angelology, the reader discovers not only that ancient text on angelology but also St. Thomas’ own “De Angelis” (“Treatise on the Angels”) from the Summa Theologica. Both authors and their respective texts are introduced and explained along the way so as to make these ancient gems more accessible to modern readers.
